Genres Reviewed
- Steampunk
- Urban Fantasy
- Dystopia
- Horror
- Paranormal Romance
- YA *that falls within the above genres* is always welcome
Note: Unless your name is Dr. Jekyll or you’re the last living werewolf, I am NOT interested in reading your autobiography.
Preferred Formats
- eBooks – ePub, mobi, or PDF.
- Audiobooks
- Print copies smell better, and I love them, but for shipping purposes, please be aware that I’m located in Canada.
Selection Criteria
I’m looking for imaginative writing, complex characters, rich and colorful world-building, and a twisty plot. Dark, gritty, and scary is good. Sarcastically funny is great. Romance is excellent, but I’ll be looking for a nail-biting plot as a backbone.
In other words, if your story is about a fashionista vampire and her werewolf shopping buddy…you should probably find somebody else to review it.
Here’s a cheat-sheet of story elements I’m a sucker for:
- siblings united against Big Evil
- music
- characters who question the world as they (or others) know it
- elemental magic/alchemy
- anti-heroes
- old, creepy houses
- Dystopia
- strong, but wounded/scarred, characters
- shapeshifters
- post-apocalyptic settings – zombies welcome, but not required
- unexpected responsibility (inheriting siblings or dependents)
Indie Authors
There is little I love as much as discovering the “hidden treasure” of an amazing indie novel. Please note, however, that I treat all stories as equal, and I measure them all against the same standards, no matter where they’re published.
Length of Review Period
The “Tower of Books to be Read” is a an ever-evolving thing – as is life – so I cannot promise a timeframe. It all depends on how much caffeine I’ve consumed, the alignment of the moon and my back door, and random other things like whether I’m putting in overtime at my paying job. Plus, I have to feed the kids. I’m sorry. They insist on it. Three times a day, even, the needy little creatures…
I use Goodreads to track what I’m reading, what I’ve recently finished, and what’s ended up in the DNF pile. Please feel free to check out my shelves there if you’re curious about the status of your story.
Guest Posts, Blog Tours, Giveaways, Etc.
Feel free to contact me and we can talk about it! (Note: I will only host giveaways for books I’ve read personally.)
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Please take a few minutes to browse the book reviews on this blog, particularly those with 2 and 3 star ratings, and make sure you’re comfortable with my level of honesty, before you request a review. This will also give you a good idea of what I’m looking for in a story.
- Due to the volume of requests received, I only respond to requests that I intend to accept, usually within a week.
- I will only accept books for review if I feel they are good match for me and my blog.
- If I accept your book for review, but it’s not working for me, I won’t finish it. (Life’s too short to stay a in dysfunctional relationship, ya know?) If I don’t finish a book, I don’t review it. I will, however, put it on my “Didn’t Finish” shelf at Goodreads. (I used to send “Dear Author” emails, but that led to some awkward moments. If I’ve DNF’d your book and you’d like to know why, feel free to contact me for an honest opinion.)
