Reader FAQ

Q. What genres books do you review?

A. Steampunk, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance are the focus of Dark Side of the Covers, but other speculative fiction genres – particularly Dystopia and Horror – are reviewed as well. I’ll randomly review other genres, but I do try to keep the blog focused.

Q. Where do you get the books you review? Do people pay you?

I state at the end of each review where the book came from. Many I purchase myself or borrow from the library, some are provided to me by authors or publishers for review. My opinion is unchanged by where the book comes from…and no, I don’t get paid.

Q. What’s with the initials? Why don’t you use your full name?

That’s for me to know, and you to wonder.

Q. Why don’t you have an index of posts?

Working on it. My tech skills are a work in progress…in the mean time, try using the “Search” field up in the navigation menu. It should hook you up with whatever you’re looking for!

So, I’m embarrassed to admit it… but what is steampunk? I’ve looked up the wikipedia definition but would much rather hear from a reader. :) Thanks!

Take modern technology and reverse-engineer it to polished wood, brass and steam-power; add a dose of the fantastic, some dark alleys and cloudy nights, and the eternal struggles of human vs. human, human vs. machine, and human vs. self – maybe even self AS machine – and you’ve got a little peek into what makes Steampunk tick.

In other words, it’s like Historical Fiction ran off with Sci-Fi and had a lovechild, who was then adopted by Fantasy and Paranormal Fiction and raised in their equal-opportunity household. :)

Why try reading it? Well, I love it because it reminds me of when I was a kid with an imagination that knew no limits…where the world could be whatever you wanted it to be. Steampunk is all about creativity, imagination, and flipping the world upside so you can look at it in a new way.

Oh. Almost forgot the most important part – it’s FUN. :)
